The anergy panel: An ineffective tool to validate tuberculin skin testing

During a 2-year period, the infection control practitioners at an acute care Department of Veterans Affairs health care system administered 440 tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) and 335 anergy panels. Each patient's computerized medical record was reviewed retrospectively. Of patients, 79% (265/335) who received both PPD and anergy testing and 62% (23/37) who were PPD positive had no response to anergy. We conclude that using the anergy panel to validate PPD skin tests was not useful in our patient population.
