BACKGROUND: Many national guidelines and references have been developed for the reduction of
Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) and establishing and/or improving antimicrobial stewardship. Outcome
measures were readily available through the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)
to demonstrate improvement in CDI. However, there were no national recommended measures
or data bases for tracking improvement in antibiotic usage. For our work, it was decided
that daily defined doses (DDD) of fluoroquinolones would be used as a measure to show
improvement in hospitals' antibiotic stewardship programs (ASP) in this association's
collaborative.
