BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) interventions have been shown to improve
individual patient outcomes, reduce the overall burden of antibiotic resistance, and
save healthcare dollars. The National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant
Bacteria states that by 2020 an ASP will be established in all acute care hospitals,
improving antibiotic stewardship across all health care settings. Nationally in 2014,
39% of hospitals had an ASP in place compared to Wisconsin's 29%-35%.
