BACKGROUND: As a tertiary teaching hospital we strive to improve the health of our community;
supportive to this mission is the coordination of a unit-based Antibiotic Stewardship
Program (ASP) designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials
on a 42 bed medical/surgical unit. The objectives are to implement evidence-based
interventions to improve individual patient outcomes, reduce the overall burden of
antibiotic resistance and reduce healthcare costs without negatively impacting patient
care. The interdisciplinary ASP committee members are committed to the program's design
with plans to expand the program to all units.
