Transmission of Clostridium difficile across Multiple Healthcare Facilities Revealed through Whole-Genome Sequencing

BACKGROUND: Traditional methods for determining Clostridium difficile transmission patterns are confounded by an inability to trace interactions among different settings. Routine use of next-generation sequencing allows preventionists to identify relationships among C. difficile cases and direct interventions in near real-time. We sought to expand upon our current knowledge of C. difficile transmission within and surrounding a 270-bed hospital through whole genome sequencing (WGS).
